It creates communities of Israeli and American fans of Israeli films and broadens understanding of life in Israel and general topics currently presented by Israeli filmmakers. Cinematec was founded in January 2016 by Dr. Etti Inbal with the support of the Kaplen JCC of The Palisades in Tenafly, NJ.

THE RETURN FROM THE OTHER PLANET
The Return from the Other Planet is a documentary about Yechiel De-Nur, a Holocaust survivor who rose to literary fame under the pen name Ka-Tzetnik.
The film delves into De-Nur’s life, exploring how his Holocaust experiences shaped his identity and creative work. Through his deeply personal books—translated into 32 languages and selling millions—he shared the unimaginable horrors of the Holocaust, leaving a lasting impact on global memory and understanding.
Blending evocative animated sequences with expert commentary, the film brings De-Nur’s inner world and literary persona Ka-Tzetnik to life. Contemporary witnesses and researchers offer insight into his complex identity and enduring legacy.
About the Director:
Assaf Lapid
Assaf Lapid is an acclaimed Israeli screenwriter, director, and editor born in 1978. He graduated from The Sam Spiegel Film and TV School in Jerusalem in 2008, where he currently serves as a lecturer and project advisor.
With over 15 years of experience, Assaf has worked as an editor on numerous Israeli and international film and television projects. His work has garnered critical acclaim, attracted global audiences, and won prestigious awards.
Notable projects include:
- FAREWELL HERR SCHWARZ (Schnee von Gestern) – A highly praised documentary described as “a masterpiece” by the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. It received the DEFA Award at DOK Leipzig 2013, Haifa IFF, and the DIALOGUE Award at Cottbus FF, among others.
- CAUSE OF DEATH – Co-writer and editor for this powerful documentary, which premiered at IDFA 201 and won The Impact Docs Award.
- BORN IN DIER YASSIN – An Israeli Film Academy Award nominee and recipient of a special mention at the Jerusalem Film Festival.
- MAMA’S ANGEL (2014) – A 10-episode drama series that premiered at Series Mania.
- WINDING (2015) – Winner of awards at FICA 2016, Chicago Arthouse FF, and the Green FF Special Award in 2016.
